     Adventures in Music.  Have you ever seen a carbon fiber black cello? Had a chance to play with a violin bow and see how many horse tail hairs it's made of? Heard and memorized such terms as "glissando", "tremolo" and "piccicato"? Well, our  3rd and 4th graders had a chance to do all of this in their "Adventures in Music". This time we went to R.L. Stevenson school and joined our friends there to hear to SF Symphony string quartet play a variety of music for us. We enjoyed pieces from jazz to tango to classics, even hip-hop played on a violin. The musicians also  played their own pieces to us deliciously called "Danish dessert" and "Joe Mocca". Can't wait for these adventures to continue!

      In December our 3rd and 4th graders had a privilege to visit San Francisco Symphony for a tour and our own private concert! Our school was chosen to participate in an exceptional program called Adventures in Music hosted by the San Francisco Symphony. Adventures in Music (AIM) is a sequential music education program designed specifically for San Francisco's elementary schools with a goal of introducing kids to classical music. It integrates live music performances and related music-learning experiences with classroom curriculum. The entire program  - taught by Ms. Dometrus to our 3rd and 4th graders throughout the year - culminated in a field trip to the Davies Symphony Hall for a private concert. We had a chance to hear about instruments and orchestra, learn each instrument's name and hear it playing a solo, meet the conductor and be part of a wonderful music making experience in one of the best symphony halls.

I am proud to let you know that Russian-American International School has been selected for the 2011 San Francisco Award in the Elementary Schools category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA).

The USCA "Best of Local Business" Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2011 USCA Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USCA and data provided by third parties.

I'm sure that our selection as a 2011 Award Winner is a reflection of the hard work of not only the school staff, but of people like you that have supported our business and contributed to the subsequent success of our school. Congratulations to all of us!

6:00 – 6:10 – English teacher will tell everyone about her rules and expectations for this school year.
6:10 – 6:30 – parents ask the teacher questions
6:30 – 6:40 – Russian teacher enters the room and explains her expectations
6:40 – 7:00 – parents ask questions

Examples of Questions to ask on Parents Teachers Conference:
1. What skills and knowledge will my child be expected to master this year?
2. How will my child be evaluated?
3. What can I do to stay more involved in my child's academic progress?
4. How do you accommodate differences in learning?
