The World Education Games 02/10/2012

Picture
Dear parents,
All of our 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders have been signed up for “ The World Education Games” -  the exciting event for all schools and students around the world.

It runs from the 6th to the 8th of March, involving 5.5million students from over 200 countries and territories. This is the global challenge to get students excited about learning, and to give the top students in each school an opportunity to see how they measure up against the best.

 WHAT DO STUDENTS DO?

Students are given their own personal online games center, from which they can participate in all 3 events from school and home.

Yesterday your child had brought home a yellow card with his/her unique username and password. Please encourage and help your child to go to www.worldeducationgames.com and start practicing math and spelling ( there are separate tubs in the upper left corner of the screen).

Students are matched in real time with up to 3 other students of similar age and ability in exciting live challenges. For Math and Spelling each challenge lasts 1 minute. Students earn points for correct answers, with their personal tally growing as they complete the challenges.

WHAT HAPPENS IN EACH MATH AND SPELLING EVENT?

On both World Spelling Day, MARCH 6th and  World Maths Day,  MARCH 7th, students progress through 5 levels of difficulty in arithmetic and mental computation, and earn 1 point for every correct answer.

Prizes will be awarded to the top students in each age category, ages 4-7, ages 8-10, ages 11-13 and ages 14-18.

The format is:

1 February - The Games open for Practice
6 March - World Spelling Day
7 March - World Maths Day
23 March - Awards

Enjoy the games!

We are proud to announce that our school has become a part of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth’s program called Global Talent Search.
This program is open to students in grades 2-8 who show great academic promise based on test scores and achievement in school. It is the most comprehensive program for academically advanced students worldwide.
The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth extends our school’s commitment to helping our academically talented students by providing a different type of academic assessment, plus special courses for qualifying students.
Our school has nominated 5 students in second grade and 6 students in third grade. These kids will receive a package with their name on it.

Parents should read and take all further actions.
We wish our nominees the best of luck on their special tests that asses their math and verbal/reading talents!

Great News!
Our school was approved by Stanford University and now all students attending RAIS can use EPGY Open Enrollment Program.(The Education Program for Gifted Youth)

What is EPGY Open Enrollment?
EPGY is Stanford University's Education Program for Gifted Youth.  EPGY Open Enrollment makes K-7 EPGY on-line courses available to students who do not have access to them in their schools and who opt not to apply for the traditional tutor-supported EPGY distance-learning courses.  The curriculum has been developed in-house at Stanford University, and a few aspects of the curriculum are unique and quite interesting. The program is self-paced and allows fairly rapid progression through the materials. Through Open Enrollment, students can take the K-7 Mathematics and Language Arts and Writing courses.
In their coursework, students are supported by their parents, who have access to monitoring capabilities, an array of self-support tools, as well as a School Support Associate(Lana Holmes), a local volunteer who receives training in the course software from EPGY staff and acts as a liaison with EPGY.

More information on the EPGY Open Enrollment Option can be found at:
http://epgy.stanford.edu/district/info.html

What are the differences between the EPGY Open Enrollment Option and the traditional EPGY courses?
  • Cost:  The biggest advantage of the EPGY Open Enrollment Option is the cost. You get access to the entire K-7 Math and Language Arts curriculum for one year (June1,2010-May 31,2011) for $135. That's a substantial savings over the cost of the traditional tutor-supported EPGY courses which run about $495 per quarter.
  • Courses Offered: K-7 Math & Language Arts and Writing
  • Options: Kids can change grades
  • Transcript:  You do not receive a Stanford EPGY transcript through the EPGY Open Enrollment Option.

Features of EPGY Courses:
  • Accelerated student learning through a highly individualized, self-paced educational experience that uses a combination of multimedia instruction and automated assessment of student progress
  • Differentiated course content that is appropriate for varying levels of student achievement, ensuring that all students remain fully engaged during the learning process
  • Instructional software that improves student understanding and motivation, and maximizes student potential and academic achievement
*Program has 1 minute lectures and exercises supported with voice explaining each topic

Can I use the software on multiple computers?
The curriculum runs on a web browser, so you should be able to access it from any computer that has internet access, but you will need to "certify" each computer to make sure it runs.

To Register:
https://epgy.stanford.edu/district/signup.html
On Registration form pick:

'School District Name' - San Francisco County
'School Name' - Russian American International School

How to choose the appropriate grade-level for your child:
There's no placement exam for the EPGY Open Enrollment Option.  You'll have to place your child in whatever level you think is appropriate, and then make adjustments once you see how it's going.  You can contact the School Support Associate (SSA- Lana Holmes) and let her know what grade-level adjustment you want to make.

Range of grades - Math K-7, Language Arts 2-7.

Once registered you will receive Student ID and Password - please save them

To begin using your courses:
1. Log in at http://epgy.stanford.edu/district using your Student ID and Password numbers. This will take you to your personalized student landing page, where you will be able to manage your account. You may want to bookmark this URL, so that you can easily return to the log in page.

2. Begin using your Stanford EPGY courses. Before running your courses for the first time: 1) Make certain pop-up blockers are turned off and cookies are allowed until they expire by your browser, and 2) Certify your computer at http://epgyschools.stanford.edu/certify (instructions for both can be found at: http://epgy.stanford.edu/district/support)

Please email me(lana@live365.com) any day and I will be able to help you if you have issues registering or starting the course.

Good Luck!
Lana Holmes
