AFTER SCHOOL

EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM

Extended Day Program with Supervised Study is available for all students at RAIS. The program strives to provide a supportive, home-like environment for children, complete with after school snacks. Choices of outdoor activities, games, art, creative play, and quiet time for reading and homework under teacher supervision for older children, are scheduled daily. Students are encouraged to socialize with classmates as well as younger and older RAIS friends.

Most of the children accepted into our program should function well within this complex system. If your child is adaptable, confident and comfortable with change, he or she will probably respond well to the challenges of our program. If there is a problem, teachers will want to meet with you as soon as possible to discuss the difficulty and to plan strategies for dealing with it. If you observe a difficulty at home you should share your observation with the classroom teacher. Sometimes a child should receive special support or counseling. Teachers may suggest that children receive such academic support or counseling either during or after school hours. When the classroom teacher observes the child struggling in a particular subject over an extended period of time, the school may recommend that the child receive professional support or counseling outside of school hours. Classroom teachers are available for paid, private tutoring. Otherwise, parents should make financial arrangements for services outside of school hours, including professional testing, counseling and tutoring directly with the individuals concerned.

OPTIONAL AFTER SCHOOL CLASSES

The below described classes are optional and are not required to complete the school program. RAIS students of all grades are welcomed to the class.

Chess Club: meets two times a week. Please ask for a schedule and monthly fees.

Chess has many educational benefits, giving children intellectual capital and transferable skills such as focus, discipline, concentration, spatial awareness and strategic thinking. Visualization approaches, and the unification of strategy with tactics will be the focus of this study. Chess boards are provided by the instructor.

Dance Club: meets two times a week. Please ask for a schedule and monthly fees.

Students learn to develop focus and coordination in a structured atmosphere through music, imagination and movement. The young dancers are also introduced to ballet and musical awareness. Basic ballet skills and vocabulary are started and students will learn the first, second, and third positions of ballet. Demi-pliés, tendus, walks, skips, and runs are also introduced using imagery to reinforce the steps.

Art Club: meets two times a week. Please ask for a schedule and monthly fees.

Learn to paint and draw like an artist! We are all born creative, but if we neglect to develop and strengthen these skills, our creativity becomes inhibited. By assisting and encouraging a child's creativity, you set the stage for endless opportunities for that child's imagination. We will work on various watercolor techniques, styles and creativity, as well as watercolor skills such as mixing colors and important composition elements. The program also stresses the concepts of fine art and provides children with the tools to help them succeed in various art projects. All materials are provided by the instructor.

Spanish Class and Chinese Class: booth meet twice a week. Please ask for a schedule and monthly fees.

You'll be astonished by the many ways your child will benefit far beyond speaking the new language. Many experts report that early exposure to a foreign language – any language – has been scientifically linked to higher IQ scores, improved English and math scores, a richer vocabulary and even a boost in SAT scores! This program is great for both students with or without some prior Spanish and Chinese exposure. The program hosts an interactive learning environment that teaches young children to speak Spanish through play time activities, such as singing, drama, stories and games. This new, non-conventional method of teaching is both enjoyable and effective. All materials are provided by the instructor.
